Joan Crawford and Fred MacMurray in Above Suspicion (1943)

FAQ

Above Suspicion

FAQ

While on their 1939 honeymoon in Europe, Oxford professor Richard Myles (Fred MacMurray) and his American wife Frances (Joan Crawford) are asked by the British Foreign Office to locate an unknown man who has details about Germany's new secret weapon, an underwater mine that attracts itself to ships by magnetism. Of course, the Myleses are happy to help, and Frances even fancies the idea of being a spy. However, as they make their way from contact to contact, not knowing who to trust without a secret code usually involving a rose, and get deeper into southern Germany, they arouse the suspicions of Gestapo chief Sig von Aschenhausen (Basil Rathbone) and realize that they are both in grave danger.

Above Suspicion is a 1941 novel by Scottish-American novelist Helen MacInnes. The novel was adapted for the movie by screenwriters Keith Winter, Melville Baker, and Patricia Coleman.

Concerto #1 in E flat by Hungarian composer Franz Liszt [1811-1886].

It will be, as Foreign Office agent Peter Galt (Richard Ainley) tells them, the person 'at the end of the trail.' That person turns out to be Doctor Mespelbrunn (Reginald Owen). Mespelbrunn can be seen handing over the plans for the German weapon when Richard and Hassie Seidel (Conrad Veidt) drop him at Jenbach after rescuing him from von Aschenhausen. He warns Richard to destroy the paper if he is caught.

After rescuing Fran from Dreikirchen where she was being held by von Aschenhausen, Richard and Hassie dress in Gestap uniforms, steal a car, and head for the Italian border with Fran hunkered down in the back seat. After a nervous moment at the border, they cross safely into Italy. In the final scene, they push the stolen car off a cliff, and Richard says, 'How about some spaghetti?'
