The Heavenly Body (1944)

Trivia

The Heavenly Body

Edit
Director Alexander Hall was borrowed from Columbia but had to leave to direct Once Upon a Time (1944) before this production was finished filming. Vincente Minnelli took over as director for the last three weeks of production, uncredited, which may account for so many of the listed actors being cut from the final print.
Many cast members in studio records/casting call lists did not appear or were not identifiable in the movie. These were (with their character names): Howard M. Mitchell (Nicholas), Jacqueline Miller (W.U. Girl), Ralph Sanford (Policeman), John Sheehan (Policeman), Cliff Nazarro (Milkman), Phillip Terry (Whitley's Assistant), Lloyd Ford (Ethel's Husband), Rex Evans (Photo Insert of Hermann Göring), and Bobby Watson (photo insert of Adolf Hitler). (W.U. Girl undoubtedly stands for Western Union Girl, but no telegrams were seen delivered.) In a Hollywood Reporter news item, Arno Frey and Dudley Dickerson were listed as cast members, but they also were not seen.
After Bill learns that Vicky went to an astrologer, he says the astrologer is a quack and that if she's sincere "I'm Charley's Aunt!" That's a reference to a three-act farce where a college boy pretends to be the aunt of his friend, Charley. In its day, it was the longest running play worldwide.
In real life, William Powell is twenty-two years older than Hedy Lamarr.
The lines of the poem that Lloyd X. Hunter (James Craig) recites are the opening of "Kubla Khan" by Samuel Taylor Coleridge: "In Xanadu did Kubla Khan, A stately pleasure-dome decree."
