Through the latter stages of the film it is shown that Cavanaugh was losing his sight. However, a fact not revealed is that when he died he was also broke. According to "Tales from the Boston College Sideline" (Reid Oslin) he warned former player Joe McKenney (later a coach) to "get out of coaching while you can - the end of every coaching career is disaster."
According to the Hollywood Reporter news accounts, the football game scenes were filmed on location at Dartmouth, Fordham, Holy Cross and Boston College.
The production was shut down from 20 May 1943 to 24 May 1943 when Pat O'Brien went on tour to promote his film Bombardier (1943).

"The Screen Guild Theater" broadcast a 30 minute radio adaptation of the movie on January 24, 1944 with Pat O'Brien and Ruth Warrick reprising their film roles.
