The WW2 era sight gags were familiar to cinema audiences at the time. But the patriotic message was clear, the home front needed to do its part. And War Bond purchases were part of the war effort.
Meat, butter, coffee and sugar were rationed during WW2. So was rubber, which is shown by the sight gags of the tire and girdle. However, out of the scarcity came new technology still in use today. One notable example, Silly Putty, was accidentally invented as scientists sought to create a synthetic rubber.
The policeman calls the speeder "Barney Oldfield." Oldfield was one of the pioneers of American automobile racing, competing from 1902 to 1918.
He is credited as the first man to drive a car at 60 miles per hour on a circular track.
