Zorro's Black Whip (1944)

Trivia

Zorro's Black Whip

Edit
Although this serial carries the credit "based on characters created by Johnston McCulley", none of the Zorro characters appears in this film. It was released as a Zorro film apparently so that the studio could be sure the moviegoers would come to watch the serial. Also, George J. Lewis, who plays the male hero, had usually played villainous roles to the moment. He will later play the role of Zorro/Diego's father, Don Alejandro de la Vega in the defining TV show Zorro (1957).
The fact that Randolph Meredith has no bullet wounds on him when he returns to his sister's house to die is no mistake. Serials were heavily regulated in those days--filmmakers were not even allowed to use blood packs, which would have made the shooting scenes more realistic.
The Black Whip is actually a creation of the studio, not Johnston McCulley.
CHAPTER TITLES: 1. The Masked Avenger; 2. Tomb of Terror; 3. Mob Murder; 4. Detour to Death; 5. Take Off That Mask?; 6. Fatal Gold; 7. Wolf Pack; 8. The Invisible Victim; 9. Avalanche; 10. Fangs of Doom; 11. Flaming Juggernaut; 12. Trail of Treachery.
Released in France in two parts: (1) Zorro le vengeur masqué, and (2) Zorro et la femme au masque noir.
