Underwater bridges were a real Soviet Army engineering feat used in WWII. A report on such submerged bridges was published in the U.S. War Department's journal "Tactical and Technical Trends", no. 29, July 15, 1943.
Based on the Broadway play "Counterattack" which opened at the Windsor Theatre, 157 W. 48th St., on February 4, 1943 and ran for 85 performances until April 17, 1943.
This version of a Russian play was adapted by John Howard Lawson, who was later blacklisted (as were some of the actors).
The paratroopers were carrying Thompson Sub Machine Guns instead of the Russian type.
