It was the expansion of the railroad that encouraged the systematic hunting of the bison. The workers needed food, meat specifically, and the company paid well for it, thus placing pressure on the bison. It was only after the railroad construction was completed that the primary economic focus shifted to hides. The railroad made them easier to transport, thus placing even more pressure on the bison.
