In the UK, a Nursing Sister (female) or Charge Nurse (male) is an experienced, senior nurse, often in charge of a whole ward, or department. Whereas the term 'Matron' usually refers to the most senior nurse in a hospital.
Medical doctors (physicians) are called "Dr". Surgeons are called "Mr" (or "Mrs" or "Miss"). It is a distinction which is far more common in the UK and Ireland than it is in other countries.
