Actress Dorothy Ford who was cast as Andy Hardy's Glamazon date, because she was taller than Rooney, was publicized as being 6'3" tall. However, she had to wear 3" heels in the movie to make her taller than she really was because her real height was only 5'11 and 1/2" in bare feet. Women, at that time, had their height measured wearing high heels. So her height difference with Rooney was only 8". The difference in height between them, if she wore flats wouldn't have made such a difference, which is what the part called for.
When Andy's aunt is polishing the trophy photos, it is seen that in addition to Kay, there are photos of Betsy Booth ( Judy Garland ) and Polly Benedict ( Ann Rutherford ). Later when an array of ten photos is revealed, one also sees Lana Turner and Donna Reed, among others.
Dorothy Ford was 6'2" tall, not 5'11" as stated earlier. This made her considerably taller than Mickey Rooney's 5'2". They put her in heels to make her appear even taller, anywhere between 6'5"-6'6". Like her character, Ford refused to wear flats or do anything to appear shorter. She advocated to tall women to embrace being tall.
