Quotes

The Beginning or the End

Edit
  • End Title Card: To the people of the 25th Century: The was THE BEGINNING. Only you, and those who have lived between us and you, can know THE END.
  • Colonel Jeff Nixon: [as the "Enola Gay" is approaching Hiroshima, 0815 in the morning] 250,000 people down there are starting their day. City about the size of Dallas, Texas. In about one second it'll be wiped off the map. They'll never know what hit them.
  • Captain William S. Parsons U.S.N.: We've been dropping warning leaflets on them for ten days now. That's ten days more warning than they gave us at Pearl Harbor.
  • Dr. J. Robert Oppenheimer: [Giving an introduction to the film, speaking to the camera] How do you do - whoever you are? My name is J. Robert Oppenheimer. I'm an American scientist, working in the year of our Lord, nineteen hundred and forty six. I'm addressing you people of the 25th century in English, now - and I hope in your time - one of the leading languages of the world. I'm working in a physics laboratory, typical of many others devoted to scientific research. In my lifetime I saw the rise of the automobile, aeroplane, the radio, television, motion pictures, and a vast spread of knowledge. I believe, as do many others, that my age is the most enlightened in all history. And yet during my lifetime I have already seen two world wars. In them, 87 million men and women perished, or were wounded. The people of my era unleashed the power which might - for all we know, *will* - destroy human life on this earth. For you of the 25th century, we have recorded our search to unlock the atom. We know the beginning. Only you of tomorrow - if there is a tomorrow - can know the end.
