According to a January 1986 "Hollywood Reporter" article, Donna Reed initially did not want to play Marguerite because she thought that Lana Turner was prettier and audiences would not believe that William (Richard Hart) would chose her over Turner.

According to MGM production files, the rights were purchased with Katharine Hepburn in mind for the starring role.
