It was the idea of Disney comic strip artist Al Taliaferro that Donald have three nephews, an inspiration he drew from the Happy Hooligan comic strip. The three nephews first appeared in a comic strip in October 1937, six months before they debuted in theaters.
It's funny that Donald, the anthropomorphic drake, is offering his nephews a baked poultry (turkey or chicken) for dinner. Poultry is also a duck, that means cannibalism in this case.
This short marks the first time that Donald's sister (and mother of Huey, Dewey Louie) is mentioned. While she is called Dumbella in this short, this was later on changed to Della Duck.
Clarence Nash provided the voice of not only Donald but of the three nephews as well.
