Franciska Gaal, Rita Johnson, and Franchot Tone in The Girl Downstairs (1938)

Trivia

The Girl Downstairs

Edit
One of the three American films by Franciska Gaal and the only one she made at MGM. Here she reprises her role from the original Catherine the Last (1936) made by Universal in Austria.
The text of the letter Katerina cannot read says: "My dear Katerina: I feel that I must tell you the truth. I am not a chauffeur as you think. I am what you would call a gentleman. I know that what I have done is unforgivable, but I want you to believe me when I say that I never meant to hurt you. Sincerely yours, Paul Wagner. P.S. Please do not expect me on Sunday at four."
Luise Rainer turned down the female lead.
This film's television premiere took place in Los Angeles Wednesday 17 July 1957 on KTTV (Channel 11); it first aired in Chicago 23 September 1957 on WBBM (Channel 2), in Fresno CA 27 November 1957 on KMJ (Channel 24), in Philadelphia 1 December 1957 on WFIL (Channel 6), in Norfolk VA 12 December 1957 on WTAR (Channel 3), in New Haven CT 15 December 1957 on WNHC (Channel 8), in Honolulu 2 March 1958 on KHVH (Channel 13), in Indianapolis 11 March 1958 on WLW-I (Channel 13), in Tampa 4 April 1958 on WFLA (Channel 8), in Columbus 15 April 1958 on WLW-C (Channel 4), in Amarillo 22 April 1958 on KFDA (Channel 19), in Spokane 21 May 1958 on KHQ (Channel 6), and in Seattle 28 May 1958 on KING (Channel 5); still Downstairs, the Girl finally landed in New York City 8 March 1962 on WCBS (Channel 2).
