Paul Kelly and Lola Lane in Torchy Blane in Panama (1938)

Trivia

Torchy Blane in Panama

Edit
The fifth of nine "Torchy Blane" films released by Warner Brothers from 1937 to 1939, and one of two Torchy Blane films not to feature Glenda Farrell and Barton MacLane as Torchy and Steve McBride. Tom Kennedy played Gahagan in all nine Torchy Blane episodes. "Torchy Blane...Playing with Dynamite" featured Jane Wyman as Torchy and Allen Jenkins as McBride.
Actors Sol Gorss (First Cab Driver), Allen Mathews (Second Cab Driver) and Jack Wise (Steward) are listed in casting call lists/studio records for their roles in this movie, but did not appear. Bob Baker is erroneously listed for the role of "Assistant Bank Manager" in a modern source, but that role was played by Art Baker. Some actors (Tom Wilson and Loia Cheaney) are barely visible and have no lines.
The plane Torchy takes off in is a Stearman C3B, registration NC4099. This particular aircraft appeared in at least 20 films between 1932 and 1941. Only 179 C3's were built from 1927 to 1929.
The $90,000 gotten in the bank robbery would be equivalent to $1,627,963 in 2021 dollars.
Lola Lane's solo appearance as Torchy Blane did have a lasting influence. When inventing a female reporter to be a love interest for their new comic strip superhero Superman, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster were reportedly influenced by Glenda Farrell's performance, and Lola Lane's alliterative name.
