MGM contractee Shirley Temple refused to appear in the film and was replaced by Virginia Weidler.
The Schooner "We're Here" previously appeared in the film Captains Courageous (1937). Some of the scenes with the schooner sailing under full canvas were taken from that film.
"Lux Radio Theater" broadcast a 60-minute radio adaptation of the movie on April 1, 1946 with Wallace Beery and Marjorie Main reprising their film roles.
This film was first telecast in Chicago IL Saturday 2 February 1957 on WBBM (Channel 2), followed by Seattle WA 20 February 1957 on KING (Channel 5), and by Los Angeles CA 25 February 1957 on KTTV (Channel 11); in Portland OR it first aired 8 April 1957 on KGW (Channel 8), in Honolulu HI 7 June 1957 on KHVH (Channel 13), in Minneapolis MN 20 June 1957 on KMGM (Channel 9), in Hartford CT 28 August 1957 on WHCT (Channel 18), and in Memphis TN 10 September 1957 on WHBQ (Channel 13); in Philadelphia PA its initial airing occurred 4 June 1958 on WFIL (Channel 6), in San Francisco CA 2 February 1959 on KGO (Channel 7) and in New York City NY 6 July 1959 on WCBS (Channel 2).
