In the review of the film in the 3 September 1941 edition of Variety Miriam Hopkins turned down the role of Joan Madison reportedly because she thought she was too old to play opposite Jeffrey Lynn. Hopkins was 38 and Bennett was 36.
The wire handed to Jim from his fiancée at the hotel reads: "Jim I must be fair to myself. I find that I cannot bring myself to live in a strange world with a man I feel I no longer know. Believe me that I tried. Laura"
Loosely based on the film Oil for the Lamps of China (1935), also from Warner Bros. The setting has been moved from China to South Americal and the theme of a man's conscience conflicting with his loyalty to his employer has been toned down.
