Lon Chaney Jr's last horror film for Universal.
Lon Chaney has not a single line of dialogue in the film. The other movie in which he does not have any dialogue is The Ghost of Frankenstein (1942), in which he starred as the Monster.
The makeup for the film was provided by Jack Pierce, famous for creating the iconic work in Universal's The Mummy and Frankenstein.
The 'Black Castle' in the Black Forest is part of the Austrian estate of count von Bruno. This could lead to think that this portion of land might as well be part of the Austrian realm. However there is no historical evidence to support that. The Black Forest is located in the present-day federal state of Baden Württemberg in Southwest Germany and at the time of the events of the film this territory was part of several small states within the Holy Roman Empire.
Shot at Universal Studios between March 12 and April 4, 1952.
