Based on the life of Emily Dunning Barringer (1876-1961). She graduated from Cornell University School of Medicine in 1901. Her surgical residency was at Gouverneur Hospital in Lower Manhattan, New York City.
This film failed at the box office, resulting in a loss to MGM of $292,000 ($2.8M in 2018) according to studio records.
An article in the July 17, 1951 edition of The Hollywood Reporter stated Robert Walker was to star in this film, but he died on August 28, 1951.
After she relocates the longshoreman's shoulder she asks for a velcro wrap for his arm. Velcro wasn't invented until the 1950s Update:10/12/10 Dr. Dunning doesn't ask for velcro. She orders an ELBOE IMMOBILIZER.
Lux Radio Theater broadcast a sixty-minute radio adaptation of the movie on May 18, 1953, with June Allyson reprising her film role.
