Santuário

The black Zé Cristiano travels to the church of Bom Jesus de Matosinhos, in the city of Congonhas do Campo, to pay for a promise. He sees "Os Doze Profetas" ("The Twelve Prophets") sculptures of Aleijadinho and returns.

The Brazilian mulatto artist Aleijadinho (Antônio Francisco Lisboa) was born in Vila Rica in 1730. He was the son of a Portuguese worker and a slave. When he was forty years old, he developed a degenerative disease in his articulations becoming crippled. He died in 1814 in Ouro Preto. Aleijadinho is considered the most important plastic artist of the "Barroco Mineiro", an important period of Brazilian history.

This weird documentary of bourgeois studio Vera Cruz was directed by Lima Barreto and is narrated by the baritone Túlio de Lemos, having erudite music score. Vera Cruz explored new referential, based on the Brazilian culture and the traditions of the Brazilian man. In this new phase of Brazilian cinema, there is an intention to show not specifically the work of Aleijadinho, but its origin in the common Brazilian man. My vote is six.
