Powell died early Thursday of natural causes in her home in Wilton, Connecticut, that she had shared with husband, actor and publicist Dickie Moore, who died in 2015. Powell’s death was confirmed to TheWrap by her longtime friend and spokesperson Susan Granger.
Powell was one of the last surviving stars of Hollywood’s Golden Age, and her storied career took her into theater and television, even playing Alan Thicke’s mother on the hit 1980s series “Growing Pains.” Powell is fondly remembered for her soprano voice and spunky charm in several classic MGM musicals, and she would eventually share the screen with stars such as Astaire, Debbie Reynolds and Elizabeth Taylor.

Hank Williams became a legend for his piercing voice, catchy tunes, and charming swagger, but as this exclusive clip from the new biopic "I Saw the Light" shows, he could wheel and deal, too.
Hank (Tom Hiddleston) and his producer, Fred (Bradley Whitford), meet with a movie mogul to discuss the possibility of the singer joining the cast of "Small Town Girl," starring Farley Granger and Jane Powell.
That's exciting news to the two men. "My wife loves Jane Powell!" Fred exclaims.
But there's one small hitch: Money. When the mogul lays out the terms of the deal -- four weeks, $4,500 a week -- Hank isn't thrilled. He thinks he's worth a lot more than that.
"I Saw the Light" traces Hank's journey through his meteoric rise to the top of country music, all while he struggles with inner demons, alcoholism, and marriage problems with wife Audrey (Elizabeth Olsen). The...

Hugh Jackman put his muscles to good use during his opening number as host of the 2014 Tony Awards on Sunday night. The actor - who has hosted the Broadway award show three times before - hopped nearly the entire time during the opening bit, taking him through the back of the theater, up an elevator (with Neil Patrick Harris!), and back to the stage again. Of course, there were plenty of celebrity cameos along the way, including several Broadway nominees and Sting. Hugh's decision to hop wasn't random, it was actually an homage to the 1953 musical Small Town Girl. After he was done bouncing, the cast of After Midnight took over for an energetic medley of their songs, ending with Hugh coming out and doing a tap dance without showing any signs of fatigue. Before he even knew what a crush was, Mike Kaplan had one on 1940s Hollywood star Jane Powell. Decades later, he got a chance to meet her
I'm not sure: either Jane Powell made me fall in love with the movies, or I fell in love with Jane Powell and the movies followed. In either case, I was six and she was my first crush before I knew what a crush was.
The year was 1948, the movie was Luxury Liner. Powell was 19, and played a spunky adolescent stowaway on a cruise ship. Her father, George Brent, is the captain, and when he discovers her aboard, she's made to scrub decks, peel potatoes and then play cupid to the various shipboard romances. She was cute, vivacious and captivating. The luxury liner might never have left the soundstages, but Powell convinced you that you were sailing across the ocean, because she sparkled with sincerity and intelligence.

Actor who rose to fame in Hitchcock's Rope and Strangers On a Train, but refused to conform to Hollywood pressures
Early on in his career, the actor Farley Granger, who has died aged 85, worked with several of the world's greatest directors, including Alfred Hitchcock on Rope (1948) and Strangers On a Train (1951), Nicholas Ray on They Live By Night (1949) and Luchino Visconti on Senso (1953). Yet Granger failed to sustain the momentum of those years, meandering into television, some stage work and often indifferent European and American movies.
The reasons were complicated, owing much to his sexuality and an unwillingness to conform to Hollywood pressures, notably from his contract studio, MGM, and Samuel Goldwyn. Granger refused to play the publicity or marrying game common among gay and bisexual stars and turned down roles he considered unsuitable, earning a reputation – in his own words – for being "a naughty boy".
