The film was originally to be made in Egypt, but it was decided to film in Australia instead to lower production costs. Egypt's relations with the West did not really begin to deteriorate until 1955, after the Nasser regime publicly recognized Communist China's claim to Taiwan and began importing arms from the Soviet Union via the Soviet client state of Czechoslovakia.

A month after filming ended Robert Newton was declared bankrupt in the UK.

The film was made five years after Treasure Island (1950), which was filmed in 1949.
