The title melody "Meet Mr. Callaghan" was picked-up in tempo and became a 1952 double-chart topper for both Les Paul and for the Harry Grove Trio, and remains a durable standard.
This is an adaptation of Peter Cheyney's "The Urgent Hangman", the first of his Slim Callaghan novels, published in 1938. However, it reaches the screen via a stage adaptation by Gerald Verner, which had been successful in London's West End in 1952, soon after Peter Cheyney's death. The play had starred Terence de Marney as Callaghan, and Derrick de Marney directed it. Derrick starred in this film (handing over directorial chores to Charles Saunders), and Harriette Johns, Trevor Reid and Larry Burns were also retained from the stage cast.
