Director Elia Kazan‘s “The Visitors” was barely noticed when it was released in 1972, and it hasn’t had many opportunities for reappraisal since. While several of Kazan’s other movies that were commercial failures during their initial runs — most notably “Baby Doll,” “A Face in the Crowd” and “Wild River” — have since been canonized as classics, “The Visitors” remains obscure. That’s a shame, because it’s a fascinating case of Kazan applying his talents to film that initially seems like a major departure, but on deeper examination reveals itself to be a personal and profound work.
A new Blu-ray from Kino Lorber provides the perfect opportunity to take a closer look after decades in which “The Visitors” was almost impossible to find (and almost never in watchable transfers — the long out-of-print MGM DVD reduces the entire movie to a murky blob). "Batman: Caped Crusader" was developed by "Batman: The Animated Series" co-creator Bruce Timm, with veteran Batman comic scribes like Ed Brubaker and Greg Rucka in the writers' room. Despite its familiar creative staff, "Caped Crusade" wound up making plenty of changes to Gotham City.
Take the villain of the first episode: the Penguin — but not as we usually know him. The "Batman: Caped Crusader" Penguin is gender-swapped from Oswald Cobblepot to Oswalda (Minnie Driver). She's got the trademark umbrella and beak-y nose, but Oswalda is neither the gentleman super-villain like most past Penguins, the repellent weirdo as played by Danny DeVito in "Batman Returns," or the waddling criminal upstart currently played by a costumed Colin Farrell in HBO's "The Penguin." The "Caped Crusader" Penguin is like an upper-crust Mags Bennett (Margo Martindale), the Kentucky mob boss villain of "Justified" season...

"Batman: The Animated Series" kept getting second leases on life. After running the syndication-required 65 episodes (the absolute most that cartoons often got back then) from 1992 to 1993, the series got 20 more episodes the following year. Rebranded as "The Adventures of Batman & Robin," this back 20 has some of the all-time best "Batman" TV episodes: "Trial," "House and Garden," "Harlequinade," "Harley's Holiday," and "Baby Doll." I shudder to think of a world without them.
After wrapping for real in 1995, Batman returned to television a mere two years later. "The New Batman Adventures" was a sequel to "The Animated Series," with the same core voice cast and crew. Some fans and official releases even label "Adventures" as just another season of "The Animated Series." The show's styles and settings, though, are different enough to stand apart.

Spoilers for "Batman: Caped Crusader" to follow.
"Batman: The Animated Series," which many would call the definitive depiction of Batman, ran for an impressive 85 episodes in the '90s. (109 if you count the follow-up season "New Batman Adventures.") Any show that could escape the 65-and-no-more syndication cap that cartoons faced in those days had to be pretty good. Even across that many episodes, though, there were still unrealized stories.
Writer/producer Paul Dini specifically wanted to do an episode where Batman, beaten within an inch of his life, met Death and Morpheus from Neil Gaiman's "Sandman" comic. However, he was told that putting a character named Death in a kids cartoon was a no-go.
That wasn't the only impact Fox Kids' censors left on "Batman." Series co-creator Bruce Timm and producer Alan Burnett have both discussed an abandoned episode pitch where Natalia Knight/Nocturna, a vampiric villain from the comics,...

When news broke in early February that Mariah Carey had booked a return ticket to Las Vegas to mount another residency, it was revealed that she would design the set list as a celebration of her 2005 blockbuster album, The Emancipation of Mimi.
It inspired the title of the exclusive run — The Celebration of Mimi — as well as the timing. Carey took the stage at Park MGM’s Dolby Live to launch the 16-date residency on April 12, 2024, exactly 19 years to the day after the album was released. It’s no surprise Carey wanted to commemorate the 14-track effort, which sold more than 10 million copies worldwide and brought the elusive chanteuse back into familiar territory at the top of the charts. The success of Emancipation of Mimi was fueled by the No. 1 smash “We Belong Together” and punctuated by singles “It’s Like That,” “Shake It Off,” “Get Your Number,” “Don’t Forget About Us,...

Take any random film directed by Zack Snyder, and hordes of his fans will probably argue that the theatrical ‘cut’ falls short of capturing the true brilliance of the director. From the much-discussed Zack Snyder’s Justice League (2021) to the director’s extended take on Watchmen (2009), the director’s cuts are arguably even more beloved than the theatrical versions.
Although he is now able to release his favorite versions of most of his films thanks to his devoted fan base, Snyder still has one more film he’d like to try. According to Snyder, who recently spoke with Empire, he is still not satisfied with the way his 2011 flick Sucker Punch turned out, and thus, he still wants to “fix” it. Well, it seems fans might need to exercise some patience.

There’s rarely just one version of a Zack Snyder film. His Watchmen adaptation arrived in various cuts – theatrical, director’s, ultimate. Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice has its Ultimate Edition. The Snyder Cut campaign brought the release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League, while his Rebel Moon films at Netflix will later receive extended, all-out, R-rated versions too. And while his 2011 original fantasy-actioner Sucker Punch technically has an extended edition already, the filmmaker has unfinished business with that film – with something much closer to a full-on director’s cut in mind.
In a major new Empire interview, Zack Snyder answered your reader questions, on movies from across his career (and plenty of other topics aside). And when asked what, if anything, he’d want to change about one of his movies, he gave a broader answer: there’s one movie he actively wants to change in a bigger way.

Since 2012, revered filmmaker Martin Scorsese has belonged to a select group of three-time Best Director Golden Globe winners that grew to include six members when Steven Spielberg took last year’s prize for “The Fabelmans.” Over a decade later, the ever-active octogenarian has a strong chance at rising above his fellow triple champs by achieving another directing victory for “Killers of the Flower Moon,” thus following Elia Kazan as the second quadruple honoree in this category’s 81-year history. Since this would be his 10th time competing here, he would also join Spielberg in the rare distinction of having double-digit directing mentions.
Scorsese earned his first Golden Globe Award in 2003 for “Gangs of New York” (on his sixth bid) and was then further lauded for “The Departed” (2007) and “Hugo” (2012). His remaining half dozen directing notices came for his work on “Raging Bull” (1981), “Goodfellas” (1991), “The Age of Innocence” (1994), “Casino” (1996), “The Aviator...

Years after his death in 2003, two-time Oscar-winning director Elia Kazan remains both an influential and controversial figure, respected and reviled in equal measure. Let’s take a look back at 15 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Kazan started his career as a stage actor, soon transitioning into directing. He mounted several landmark productions, including the original run of “A Streetcar Named Desire.” Throughout his career he received three Tony awards for Best Director of a Play: “All My Sons” in 1947, “Death of a Salesman” in 1949, and “J.B.” in 1959.
He transitioned into filmmaking with “A Tree Grows in Brooklyn” (1945). Two years later, he won his first Oscar for Best Director for “Gentleman’s Agreement” (1947), which also took home Best Picture and Best Supporting Actress (Celeste Holm). A taboo-shattering drama about antisemitism, the film established Kazan as a director drawn towards contemporary, hot-button topics.

Long before Netflix’s Blonde landed a controversial Nc-17 rating, the Motion Picture Association gave films like Baby Doll (1956) and Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1966) “adults only” designations as a way to placate concerned parents and reformers.
Now, when news surfaces of Hollywood allegedly kowtowing to everything from domestic social crusaders to foreign governments, debate lights up headlines and social media conversations. But, historically speaking, industry moguls have most often erred on the side of not ruffling feathers, home or abroad, in order to court consumers — as evidenced in the birth of the MPA 100 years ago.
The lobbying group, which is marking its centennial in 2022, was born as the Motion Picture Producers and Distributors Association in 1922. Mppda counsel C.C. Pettijohn once told a 1929 Public Relations Conference that the film industry was first understood as a three-legged stool that included production, distribution, and exhibition.

Right from the start, In Search of… stood out. I discovered N.E.R.D.’s 2002 debut at a Best Buy on the rim of Houston’s I-10 loop, sitting at the front of the store on a blue kiosk marked 6.99. I was a first-year high school English teacher, struggling to pull together all the things expected of me. There was this unfussy album cover staring at me, with a twenty-something Black guy on a battered-looking couch in a nondescript apartment playing a video game in his house clothes, blankly staring at an off-screen TV,...

Directed by Elia Kazan
Depraved, degenerate, and dreadfully funny, the genre known as Southern Gothic blurred the line between humor and horror and helped define the work of artists like William Faulkner, Carson McCullers, and Tennessee Williams. Depending on who you talked to, the experience was either a bracing walk on the wild side or freak show sensationalism. Poetry or not, books like Sanctuary and Reflections in a Golden Eye were catnip to thrill-hungry Hollywood execs who gobbled up the rights and, true to form, removed the raw carnality that made the original stories so… stimulating. That wasn’t the case with Williams’ screenplay for 1957’s Baby Doll—though its Rabelaisian spirit made it one of the most controversial and widely condemned events in movie history, the driving force behind Elia...

Times are tough for cotton miller Archie (Karl Malden), but at least he has his child bride (Carroll Baker), who’ll soon be his wife in title and truth. The one-year agreement keeping them under the same roof – yet never in the same bed – is about to end. But a game with a sly business rival (Eli Wallach) is about to begin. In Baby Doll, as in A Streetcar Named Desire, director Elia Kazan and writer Tennessee Williams broke new ground in depicting sexual situations – earning condemnation from the then-powerful Legion of Decency. They earned laurels too: four Academy Award® nominations, Golden Globe® Awards for Baker and Kazan, and a British Academy Award for Wallach. Watch this funny, steamy classic that, as Leonard Maltin’s Movie Guide proclaims,...

There are only two months left to go in this truly hellish year and relatively new streaming service HBO Max is trying to make the best of them. While most other streamers recover from Halloween and get prepared for Christmas, HBO Max is using November 2020 to fill out its servers.
Things are pretty light not the new original series front this month with only Industry (Nov. 9) and His Dark Materials season 2 (Nov. 16) making a splash. But the streamer has a couple of notable original films to complement them. Between the World and Me, based on the book by Ta-Nehisi Coates, arrives on Nov. 21 and Melissa McCarthy comedy Superintelligence arrives on Nov. 26. That’s not even to mention two intriguing projects that don’t have dates yet: The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air Reunion Special and The Mystery of Db Cooper.

When it comes to releasing unique and collectible Blu-ray box sets (such as their Al Adamson: The Masterpiece Collection), Severin Films has done an amazing job preserving horror history, and this summer they'll continue to do so with The Complete Lenzi Baker Giallo Collection, featuring Umberto Lenzi's collaborations with Carroll Baker:
"On June 30th, Severin Films is bringing together the complete collaborative works of two cult film legends with The Complete Lenzi Baker Giallo Collection, which includes superlative editions of Orgasmo, So Sweet… So Perverse, A Quiet Place To Kill, and Knife Of Ice.
Italian writer/director Umberto Lenzi helmed popular peplums, created extreme poliziotteschi, and invented the Italian cannibal phenomenon. Hollywood actress Carroll Baker was the Golden Globe® winning/Academy Award® nominated star of Baby Doll, Giant and The Carpetbaggers. Together in the late ‘60s/early ‘70s, they made four landmark films that changed the erotic thriller and giallo genres forever.

Martin Scorsese has long been an admirer of Elia Kazan, and should he win the Golden Globe for helming Netflix’s mafia epic “The Irishman,” he’d tie his cinematic hero as the most rewarded director in the group’s history.

Kazan currently holds the record for the most Best Director wins at the Globes with four victories out of as many nominations: “Gentleman’s Agreement” (1947), “On the Waterfront” (1954), “Baby Doll” (1956) and “America America” (1963). Both “Gentleman’s Agreement” and “On the Waterfront” brought him Oscar wins, while “America America” earned him Academy Award bids in Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay (he also competed for “A Streetcar Named Desire” in 1951 and “East of Eden” in 1955).
Scorsese is close behind with three wins for “Gangs of New York” (2002), “Hugo” (2011) and “The Departed” (2006), for which he also won his first Oscar. He...

Martin Scorsese could be on cloud nine when the Golden Globe ceremony is over. The icon is on track to earn his ninth Best Director nomination, for his meditative mob epic “The Irishman,” but more importantly, if his name is in the envelope, he’d tie the record for most wins in the category at four.
Elia Kazan is the sole record holder, having converted all four of his nominations into wins for “Gentleman’s Agreement” (1947), “On the Waterfront” (1954), “Baby Doll” (1956) and “America America” (1963). Three other directors have a perfect record from multiple bids, but they’re all from two nominations: James Cameron (1997’s “Titanic” and 2009’s “Avatar”), Alfonso Cuaron (2013’s “Gravity” and 2018’s “Roma”) and William Friedkin (1971’s “The French Connection” and 1973’s “The Exorcist”).

We look back on Rip Torn's career and how the occasional troublemaker turned bit parts into leading roles.
In the summer of 1969, Rip Torn was drunkenly screaming through New York’s West Village on his motorcycle when he slammed it into a police cruiser. Torn broke his leg in the accident but didn’t notice. The next morning, he got up, got on a plane, and flew to Paris where he was set to star in Joseph Strick’s film version of Henry Miller’s Tropic of Cancer. He shot the entire film all hopped up on painkillers for an untreated leg. And you know what? He still gives a remarkable performance. It wasn’t the only time he worked with broken bones either.

“There’s nothing as trustworthy as the ordinary mind of the ordinary man,” is the haunting mantra scrawled in leering monogram on the façade of the monolith created for overnight celebrity, Lonesome Rhodes, an exemplification of the terrifying end result of America’s perverted worship for the cult of personality.

Elia Kazan would have celebrated his 109th birthday on September 7, 2018. Years after his death in 2003, the two-time Oscar-winning director remains both an influential and controversial figure, respected and reviled in equal measure. In honor of his birthday, let’s take a look back at 15 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
A taboo-shattering drama about antisemitism, the film established...

French fashion designer Christian Louboutin, who built a luxury empire, thanks to his signature stilettos and red-lacquered soles, maybe a favourite on home turf with India’s leading ladies, however, our very own Kanika Kapoor managed to convince him to do quite the unthinkable.
Kanika, one of the country’s most sought after singers and leading fashion icons, was in Paris recently to attend the front row of Sonia Rykiel ‘s show at the Paris Fashion Week (Haute Couture). She later attended a special intimate dinner hosted by Louboutin as one of his 40 private guests.
If that wasn’t all, while in Paris, Kanika Kapoor collaborated with him for a magazine exclusive where she not only taught him the lyrics of her iconic song ‘Baby Doll’ but also made him join in her in dancing to her other hit ‘Chittiyaan Kalaiyaan’.
