    Chicago Daily Times, Friday, October 17, 1947, p. 58, c. 1:

    JIMMIE FIDLER

Hollywood---Every now and then a player arrives on the Hollywood scene whose real life has been even more dramatic than the phony backgrounds that press agents like to dream up for their clients. Such a player is Joanne de Bergh, recently signed by David O. Selznick and now on loan to 20th Century Fox to play the feminine lead in "Call Northside 777." Miss De Bergh is a Hollander. During the early days of the Nazi occupation, her husband was arrested by Gestapo agents and loaded on a prison barge for his journey to a German concentration camp. Miss de Bergh watched the boat leave the dock---and was still watching when it struck a mine and was blown to bits with the loss of everyone aboard. In "Call Northside 777," she plays the wife of a man unjustly convicted and sent to prison. She should play it with real feeling.

Henry Hathaway, who found Richard Widmark, now has another discovery. She's a Dutch actress, Joanne De Bergh. During the war she was connected with the Dutch theater underground and saw her husband shot at her side. Joanne will play opposite Jimmy Stewart in "Northside 777." . . . .

Hollywood, Sept. 10---Helen Walker, who recently finished "Nightmare Alley," will play opposite Jimmy Stewart in "Nortrhside 777." Richard Conte, who's also supposed to be in the latter picture, is still under suspension, altho the film is supposed to start in about a week. Conte wants romantic leads and no more heavies. . . .

The hit Fox film, Call Northside 777, opened in Chicago at the Chicago theatre (State near Randolph--still standing), on Thursday, February 19, 1948. An ad reads: "The True Story of Chicago's Heart . . . Filmed in the Heart of Chicago! Stranger Than Fiction, Every scene--every biting word . . . IS TRUE . . . Out of the bullet-blasted past . . . hidden for years in a maze of mystery and hush-hush intrigue this human drama screams for vengeance! 20th Century-Fox Dramatic Blast!"

The Chicago television premiere of the hit Fox film, Call Northside 777, happened on Sunday, October 4, 1959, at 9:30 p.m.--an ad reads: "First Run WGN-TV 9--There's A Beat in the Pulse of This Picture That Becomes Your Very Own!"

    Chicago Tribune, June 6, 1947, p. 30:

    LOOKING AT HOLLYWOOD

    by Hedda Hopper

Hollywood, June 5---Jimmy Stewart will star in "Call Northside 777" and Henry Hathaway will direct it. Most of the scenes will be shot in Chicago, with production starting in August. Since Jimmy has gone to New York to take over the Frank Fay role in 'Harvey,' it's almost a foregone conclusion that he'll wind up playing the part on the screen. I reported some months ago that Brock Pemberton and Andy Stone had made arrangements to star Bing Crosby in the film. But so many protesting letters came in from Catholics that Bing is no longer in the picture. "How," fans wanted to know, "could Bing play an inebriate in "Harvey" after playing Father O'Malley in 'Going My Way'?"

    by Sidney Skolsky

    Hollywood, Sept. 21---

Richard Conte and his studio have stopped feuding, and Conte has consented to play in "Northsie 777" with Jimmy Stewart. . . .

    HOLLYWOOD CHATTER

Jimmy Stewart's "Northside 777" will have only three weeks location work---in Chicago. The new tendency in movies is to do exteriors away from Hollywood, for which authenticity, heven be praised.

Chicago Daily Times, Friday, September 26, 1948:

    KUP'S COLUMN

Two Chicago priests, resembling somewhat the elderly and youthful fathers portrayed by Barry Fitzgerald and Bing Crosby in "Going My Way," will appear in "Call Northside 777."

Rev. Casimir Sztuczko, pastor of Holy Cross Congregational church, and his assistant, Rev. George Szymanowski, were filmed in bit parts yesterday by Director Henry Hathaway, as a crowd of some 200 persons looked on.

The crowd eventually broke through the police lines and made a bee-line for Jimmy Stewart, who obligingly made with the autographs.
