Vida en sombras (1949)

Trivia

Vida en sombras

Edit
Serious troubles with Spanish censorship forced the director to raise personal & family funds to complete the picture. Its critical view on the Spanish Civil War resulted in the government withdrawing approval and money and rating it as third-class until some scenes were re-edited. It received mainly negative critics and was ignored for years. It also meant the end of Llobet-Gràcia career as a director, forcing him to drop future projected films.
Two subsequent restorations were carried out in 1983 and 2012. The 1983 reprint from the original 16 mm negative, carried on by Ferran Alberich from the Spanish Filmoteca, produced a documentary, "Bajo el signo de las sombras". The 2012 one was made by the Filmoteca de Catalunya, using the only two 16 mm copies found. During the process, 15 cuts of 35 mm negative and positive nitrate film were examined and enabled the reconstruction in 2016. The film is now considered one of the most interesting and original Spanish post-war films.
