Although Tom Corbett was supposed to be a teenager, Frankie Thomas was 30 years old when the series debuted.

After his death in 2006, Frankie Thomas was buried in his Tom Corbett costume.

This was one of only six TV series to air on all four US television networks of the 1950s: ABC, CBS, NBC and DuMont. The others are Stump the Stars (1947), Ted Mack & the Original Amateur Hour (1948), The Arthur Murray Party (1950), Down You Go (1951) and The Ernie Kovacs Show (1952).

The series' concept was based on Robert Heinlein's book "Space Cadet". The phrase "blast off" originated on this program.

This was the first series to air on four major US TV networks - CBS, ABC, DuMont and NBC.
