A colorful but old-fashioned love drama combined with the spectacular dancing of Antonio the Dancer.
Jaime, Carlos Muñoz, a music composer, has retiired due to the illness of his wife Isabel, Asunción Sancho, with whom he takes refuge in a small Galician town. Jaime takes advantage of this stay to compose a play with the ballet of the great dancers Antonio and Rosario, to whom he promised to do so when he met them on a trip to Madrid. Meantime, the wife meets again with an old flame (José Maria Mompin), who has returned to her life with the intention of resuming their illicit relationships. Things go from bad to worse when the husband finds out about his wife's relation, leading to jealousy, revenge and violence.
The film was decently directed by Jose Maria Forqué, although it has a well-worn plot about ordinary jealousy in love that ends in tragic consequences. The movie is shot in a grand style, with dignified, agile and professional direction, although with some flaws due the director's inexperience. In subsequent shoots, he would smooth out its rough edges, its flaws or its errors. José Maria Forqué was born in Zaragoza and father of actress Verónica Forqué y director Álvaro Forqué. He was a writer and director, known for filming some classical Spanish pictures, such as: "Un millón en la basura", "Accidente 703", '" Amanecer de la puerta oscura", " Embajadores en el infierno", and especially the unforgettable comedy, "Atraco a las 3".
"Niebla y sol" turns out to be a love tragedy, whose content revolves around a ballet to the greater glory of the dancers Antonio and Rosario, at that time undisputed figures of classical Andalusian dance and who had their own ballets. The movie shows, between dance and dance, a love triangle that will give rise to a terrible tragedy. Thus, tragic events occur both in the film's story and in the ballet. This is the first feature film that filmmaker Forque directed alone, with the help of the equally prolific director Pedro Lazaga, who wrote the script and served as his production manager.
In addition to the attractive dances set to music by the great composer Jesús García Leoz, stands out the movie's atmospheric black and white photography, full of lights and shadow, by cameraman Juan Marine. Along with the main actors, Carlos Muñoz and Asunción Sancho, who provide somewhat affected interpretations, typical of the time when it was filmed, there is a good group secondary actors who give pleasant performances, such as: Roberto Font, José Maria Mompin, Maria Dolores Pradera who married Fernando Fernán Gomez, Anibal Vela, Modesto Cid and the eternal secondary character Xan Das Bolas.
Rating: 6.5/10. The film will appeal to Spanish film fans, and the Andalucian dancing enthusiasts.
