Rich Peppiatt’s drama Kneecap, which made it onto short list for Best International Feature Film for the 97th Academy Awards earlier this week, has scooped the top Crystal Arrow for best film at France’s Les Arcs Film Festival.

Exclusive: Prime Video is coming out hot in Poland, having identified the country as a key emerging European hub.

The streamer used a ‘Prime Video Presents’ showcase in Warsaw to unveil a series of originals, production updates and an increase in investment in the Polish creative industry. Assorted stars, celebrities and industry figures attended the event, which was fronted by Director of Prime Video EU Emerging Ritchie Ordonez and Sylwia Wilk, Senior Content Acquisition Manager at Prime Video Poland.

On the originals front, Prime Video has ordered a doc series on popular Polish singer Doda, lined up music talent series Rap Generation and reality competition series The 50. A slate of Polish movies were also revealed.

A panel of top Netflix executives touted 10 years of the global streamer in such key European territories as France, Germany and Italy on Tuesday.

At Content London, vp of content Emea Larry Tanz, vp of content France Pauline Dauvin and vp of content Italy Tinny Andreatta spoke during a fireside discussion celebrating big milestones for Netflix, with the 10-year anniversary this year in France and Germany and more dates to mark in 2025 in Italy and Spain.

During the session, Tanz shared that between 2020 and 2023, Netflix invested €6.5 billion ($6.8 billion) in European, non-English series and films, including some of the service’s most popular series and films, such as Society of the Snow (Spain), Troll (Norway), Borgen (Denmark), Under Paris (France), High Water (Poland), and The Hand Of God (Italy).

“That’s great for our members from films and series they get, but also for the industry,” Tanz said. “That has resulted in 60,000 jobs just in Europe.

Unifrance on Tuesday unveiled the nine nominees for its TV export awards, which honor the French television shows that have sold the most worldwide.

Netflix is adapting Love is Blind in Italy.

Love is Blind Italy is the latest version of the dating format at the streamer, with other versions running in the UK, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, Germany, Brazil, Sweden and Argentina.

The original was created in the U.S. by The North Road Company’s Kinetic Content. Stateside, it has run for seven seasons on Netflix.

Banijay Italia will make the Italian version, and casting has begun. No launch plans were forthcoming at this stage.

The series follow group of singles looking for love who choose someone to marry without ever meeting them face-to-face and no outside distractions. When the wedding day arrives, they are faced with the real-world realities of marriage and external factors that could push them apart.

The UK version launched in August, and the Swedish remake debuted in January and was renewed for a second season two months later.

The BBC is apologizing to Amanda Abbington.

The 50-year-old Sherlock actress received the apology after claiming she was bullied by her Strictly Come Dancing partner Giovanni Pernice during the show last year.

After a months-long investigation, a ruling was announced on Monday (September 30).

In a statement, via Deadline, the BBC said: “We have assessed the complaints and we have upheld some, but not all, of the complaints made. We want to apologize to Amanda Abbington and to thank her for coming forward and taking part. We know this would not have been an easy thing to do.”

“Strictly,” the U.K. equivalent of “Dancing With the Stars,” is one of the broadcaster’s most popular and longest-running formats. But it has been mired in controversy former contestants, including Abbington, claimed they had been bullied and harassed on the show.

The BBC said it would investigate after Abbington made specific allegations regarding her dance partner Giovanni Pernice. Now the corporation has confirmed it has “upheld some, but not all, of the complaints made.” The report did not find Pernice guilty of threatening or abusive behavior.

“We want to apologise to Amanda Abbington and to thank her for coming forward and taking part,” the statement continued. “We know this would not have been an easy thing to do.”

Tim Richards’ Vue, Europe’s largest privately owned cinema operator, is teaming with UK producers Andy Paterson and Annalise Davis, and virtual production outfit Dimension Studios, to form Virtual Circle, to deliver a slate of £5m-£15m UK films. Vue will directly release the films into cinemas.

Virtual Circle has been set up in response to the new 40% Independent Film Tax Credit (Iftc); the first two films, 2040 and Campbeltown ‘69, are expected to shoot this summer.

After years of frustration with the roles being offered her in Norway, Reinsve had decided to try out Plan B: Learn woodworking and set up a carpentry school for young girls and women.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced shortlists in 10 categories for the 96th Academy Awards, with The Taste Of Things (France), The Zone Of Interest (UK), Fallen Leaves (Finland), The Mother Of All Lies (Morocco), and Totem (Mexico) among those to make the cut in the international feature film category.

Shortlists were also announced for documentary feature, documentary short film, makeup and hairstyling, music (original score), music (original song), animated short film, live action short film, sound and visual effects.

Ridley Scott’s Napoleon and Michael Mann’s Ferrari are facing allegations — surprising for two films focused on straight white male protagonists — of cultural appropriation.

French and Italian critics have taken offense at the directors’ decisions to cast American actors to play national icons — Joaquin Phoenix as Napoleon Bonaparte, the general who became French emperor, and Adam Driver as visionary Italian carmaker Enzo Ferrari — and, adding insult to injury, having them speak in English.

“It’s original sin,” wrote a Ferrari reviewer for Italy’s Movieplayer magazine on the casting of Driver, alongside Spanish actor Penélope Cruz as Ferrari’s wife, Laura, and American Shailene Woodley as his mistress. “Not just to have them speak English, but with a dodgy Italian accent.”

Cinema professionals from across Europe are gathering in Berlin this weekend for the ceremony of the 36th European Film Awards on Saturday evening.

This younger cousin of Hollywood’s near hundred-year-old Academy Awards is overseen by the Berlin-based European Film Academy.

The body’s 4,600 members – hailing from “geographical Europe” as well as Israel, Palestine and Russia, – vote on an official Academy Selection made up of around 40 films selected by the European Academy Board and a group of experts.

Finnish filmmaker Aki Kaurismäki’s Fallen Leaves and UK director Jonathan Glazer The Zone Of Interest top the nominations this year, followed by Justine Triet’s Cannes Palme d’Or winner Anatomy Of A Fall and Poland’s Agnieszka Holland’s Green Border, which won the Venice Special Jury Prize.
