The lush beautiful green landscape seen in the film was the province of Quebec in Canada.
The film was made and released about seventeen years after its source novel of the same name by Jim Kjelgaard had been first published in 1945.
The first half of "Big Red" was telecast on "Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color" on the same night that "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" had its television premiere. Both programs were shown on NBC. The second half of "Big Red" was shown a week later.
