Quotes

The Victors

Edit
  • [Craig is sound asleep in Philippe's old bed. Sounds of explosions and gunfire rage on outside, but he doesn't stir. A noise startles him awake and he grabs his gun barrel]
  • Sgt. Craig: Who's there?
  • [It's the French Woman. She's cowering in a corner of the bedroom]
  • French Woman: I'm sorry. I didn't want to disturb you, but I'm frightened. I just wanted to stay here, near someone.
  • Sgt. Craig: Those are our guns, I think.
  • French Woman: Mmm... It's not the guns, it's the planes! They were bombing till a moment ago, and you never woke up!
  • [She begins to sob]
  • French Woman: I slept for a while, and I haven't been able to since. I really don't know how you can sleep with all that!
  • [She and Craig hear explosions outside]
  • French Woman: I can't be alone. I just can't bear it anymore. Please... may I stay here? I won't bother you. Please!
  • [Craig lifts the covers of the bed, beckoning her in. Gratefully, she gets in beside him]
  • Sgt. Craig: [to Corporal Chase in the hospital] Stupid idiot! Get outta here!
  • Cpl. Frank Chase: [close to tears] Hi, Sarge.
  • Sgt. Craig: All right, fall out.
  • [His troupe starts to leave]
  • Sgt. Craig: No, hold it, hold it. I wanna give you ten minutes. I don't want anybody getting lost. I don't want any looting, and I don't want anybody going into these houses. They're full of booby traps. I'm not gonna hang around to scrape any stupid idiot off a wall. Is that clear? Okay, fall out.
  • [the men start walking]
  • Sgt. Craig: Anybody need any water, get me a canteen.
  • [a soldier does so. Now that his men have gone to relax, Craig strolls through the city until he comes to a fountain. There he rehydrates and fills the canteen. A little while later he strolls back to where his men had been. And there are nowhere to be seen. Where have the stupid idiots got to now? As it turns out, some of them are trying on hats in a shop. Craig appears in the doorway, looking displeasedly at the soldiers]
  • Sgt. Craig: I thought I said no looting. Stupid idiots. Where are the rest of you? Alright, get outside. Get a move on. You know you'd get shot for this?
  • [One by one, they start out of the shop, and Craig snatches the hats as they walk past]
  • Sgt. Craig: Out. Out. Come on, move! Ou-
  • [His order is cut off as a soldier tosses a hat away. Craig finds the rest of his soldiers in another shop, singing and playing]
  • Sgt. Craig: All right, children! You stupid idiots. Leave you in charge. Alright, out. Everybody, out. Come on, move!
  • [Trower winds a music box and music starts to play. The soldiers all listen in silence. Craig furiously storms over to the group but even he is moved by the music and is listening without a word. When the music stops, the sergeant checks his watch and sighs]
  • Sgt. Craig: All right, let's go.
  • Sgt. Craig: I can't make you out, fella. I coulda sworn you had leadership qualities. You'd have made sergeant in another six months. But you got no sense of responsibility. You just don't give a damn. Why? Why?
  • Cpl. Frank Chase: I dunno. But don't let it worry you, Joe.
  • Soldier: Where's your sentries, Craig?
  • [to his other men]
  • Soldier: Little Bo Peep has lost his sheep!
  • Magda: Let the fools fight. They have all the fools they need.
  • Sgt. Craig: I told you not to laugh too soon.
  • Sgt. Craig: You can report me for that if you like.
