Loosely based on the sensational landmark 'Nanavati Case' - which was India's last trial by jury. Commander Kawas Manekshaw Nanavati was accused of the murder of Prem Ahuja on 27 April 1959 and was finally pardoned by the president. Nanavati's story is also dramatized in the series: The Verdict - State Vs Nanavati (2019). The case inspired several other films including: Achanak (1973), Asthram (1983), Rustom (2016), and Love Affair which began production in 2016 but remains unreleased.
Director R.K.Nayyar left this film incomplete, then Sunil Dutt completed this film. This film was Sunil Dutt first film as producer and first film of Ajaanta Arts banner.
Sunil Dutt had signed. R.K.Nayyar to direct this film and after about 30 years R.K.Nayyar had signed Sunjay Dutt for his film Yeh Jo Mohabbat Hai, but this film was shelved.

The film did moderately well in 1-2 weeks but later run for 25 weeks. It achieved silver jubilee status.
