The Evil of Frankenstein (1964)

FAQ

The Evil of Frankenstein

FAQ

After ten years away and nearly penniless, Baron Victor Frankenstein (Peter Cushing), accompaned by his trusty assistant Hans (Sandor Elès), returns to his chateau in Karlstaad, intending to sell off his furnishings in order to fund new experiments, only to find that his chateau and laboratory have been looted by the corrupt burgomaster (David Hutcheson). In a stroke of luck, he discovers his original creature (Kiwi Kingston) frozen in a block of ice and sets out to reanimate him with the help of an untrustworthy hypnotist, Professor Zoltan (Peter Woodthorpe), the man with the amazing eyes of fire.

The Evil of Frankenstein, like all Frankenstein movies, stems from the 1818 novel Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus, by 19-year old British author Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin Shelley [1797-1851]. The screenplay for the movie was written by British screenwriter Anthony Hinds (under the name John Elder), who also produced the film. It is the third film in a series of seven Frankenstein movies produced by UK's Hammer Studios, best known for its revival of the horror genre in the 1960s and 1970s. Preceded by The Curse of Frankenstein (1957) (1957) and The Revenge of Frankenstein (1958) (1958), The Evil of Frankenstein was followed by Frankenstein Created Woman (1967) (1967), Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed (1969) (1969), The Horror of Frankenstein (1970) (1970), and Frankenstein and the Monster from Hell (1974) (1973).

Victor breaks out of jail, steals a cart, and hurries back to the lab where he finds the monster in a drunken rage, thanks to the deaf-mute beggar girl (Katy Wild) giving him some brandy for his headache. Hans leads the girl out of the lab while Victor tries to calm down the creature. In his rage, however, the creature starts throwing things around, blocking the door and setting fire to some electrical wires. Victor tries to subdue him with chloroform, but he drinks it instead, thinking it is brandy. Unable to get out of the burning laboratory, Victor shouts out to Hans, ordering him and the girl to get out of the chateau. Hans and the girl run outside just as the tower laboratory explodes. Watching the rubble fall off the edge of the cliff, Victor says to himself, 'They beat him after all.'
