To celebrate Valentine’s Day, Subhash K Jha asked Filmistan what their favorite prem kahaani films are and the answers were amazing!
Amitabh Bachchan:
“Guru Dutt’s Kagaz Ke Phool: poignant and incredible theme, most lingering visuals, music, performances, and the ethereal Waheedaji, she’s my favourite; Anupama … “I just love the softness and simplicity of the film, its unexaggerated performances. It had a lyrical quality about it. This was a film by one of my favourite directors, Hrishikesh Mukherjee.” Bimal Roy’s Devdas: “I have always idolized Dilip Saab; his portrayal of doomed love in Devdas remains unparalleled.”
Sanjay Leela Bhansali:
“Bimal Roy’s Devdas, Vijay Anand’s Guide, Kamal Amrohi’s Pakeezah, K Asif’s Mughal-e-Azam, Satyajit Ray’s Charulata.”
Raakhee Gulzar:
“Satyajit Ray’s Charulata, Vijay Anand’s Guide, Raj Kapoor’s Sangam, Raj Kapoor’s Bobby, Yash Chopra’s Kabhi Kabhie.”

Lata Mangeshkar & Raj Kapoor Made A Powerful Team Till A Massive Fallout. (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Lata Mangeshkar is a legend who has marked her impression on the souls of every music lover across the globe. The daughter of the nation was the refuge for many who sought solace in her voice. Every one of us have our individual Lata Didi Ke Nagme playlist. The late playback singer was the heart of the nation and the first choice for most of the directors.
The late singer had a brilliant working and personal equation with Raj Kapoor since the beginning. However, it was twice that the two locked horns. And the first fight was rather brutal with Raj Kapoor getting a straight refusal from the singer to sing for his film.

Raj Kapoor & His Sangam Writer Had A Massive Showdown On The Night Of The Release. (Photo Credit – Youtube)
It was the year 1964 when Raj Kapoor delivered the highest-grossing film of the year. A love triangle that was cherished for years and is still considered a classic – Sangam. The film starred Vyjayanthimala and Rajendra Kumar in the lead roles, along with the showman himself.
Helmed by Rk himself, Sangam was released on June 19, 1964, and a major showdown happened on the night of the release when the entire cast was together to celebrate a successful opening. However, none contemplated what transpired that night – A massive showdown, a slap, and an ugly consequence!
Sangam was written by Inder Raj Anand, and while everyone was enjoying the success party, Raj Kapoor and Inder were engrossed in a heated argument. Before anyone could realize the cause of this heated discussion, all they could witness was a tight slap!

TVPerhaps Solomon Pappaiah’s parents knew the destiny that awaited their son when naming him. Solomon, the wise, who sits in on judgement. One whose word is final.Nadika NOne of my earliest memories of Pongal – back when the earth was a younger place and the air was fresh and the water flowed – was that of boys in my neighbourhood buying little drums from the local ‘provision’ store and waking up an entire neighbourhood with their enthusiastic beats. More noise than music, it was tolerated as something you just do on the first day of Pongal. The other memory very strongly associated with Pongal – apart from the raison d'être of Pongal, which is Pongal the food – came a bit later. When television in India had begun to flex its muscles, Sun TV was on, and that mildly nasal voice coming from a benign-looking man in a shirt and veshti rolled...

In fact biographies from Bollywood are known to gloss over the truth. And Rishi, who is known to call a spade a spade, won't have any lies and half-truths in his autobiography. Apparently, he won't mince words in the book about the various women he has dated. According to a close friend of the yesteryears' heart-throb, "He has taken his wife's permission to be as truthful as possible about the women in his life. Last Saturday, one of the most awaited events of the 16th London Asian Film Festival took place at the BAFTA. ‘Remembering Yash Chopra’ was a tribute to Bollywood’s legendary director, but also to the husband, father and friend.
The director’s widow Pamela Chopra was joined by Professor Rachel Dwyer and actor Anupam Kher to share with the audience some of the most salient events in the director’s career, as well as their most cherished memories.
The evening started with the screening of The Master Stroke, a documentary directed by Vinky Singh. Inspired by the nine rasas used in Indian art forms, the film explores Yash Chopra’s career from his first work to his last.
In probably the most emotional moment of the evening, a visibly moved Pamela Chopra went on stage while singing some verses of Veer Zaara’s Tere Liye as she gazed at her late husband’s image.

Film: "Bullett Raja"; Cast: Saif Ali Khan, Jimmy Shergill, Sonakshi Sinha and Vidyut Jammwal; Director: Tigmanshu Dhulia; Rating: ****
From Raj Kapoor and Rajendra Kumar in "Sangam" to Dharmendra and Amitabh Bachchan in "Sholay", filmy friendships have flourished with formulistic fervour in our films.
It takes guts to turn the conventional formulistic cinema about male bonding and revenge into a tightly wound intelligently scripted and judiciously executed drama of political subterfuge in Uttar Pradesh, a favourite haunt for Tigmanshu Dhulia's cinema, here turned into a hotbed of intrigue and drama.
"Bullett Raja" is woven around characters who aren't particular about the company or the morals that they keep. Politicians.

While at the Vancouver International Film Festival this year, I had the pleasure of speaking to the writer/director of Patang [The Kite], Prashant Bhargava. A Chicago-born filmmaker of Indian descent, his first feature length work has hit screens in Berlin and Tribeca before making its way to Canada, picking up praise at every screening. A very human tale of a family in Ahmedabad rekindling during the city’s famous kite festival, Bhargava’s film will enchant and intrigue through its exotic locale and very familiar emotions. Speaking about his process, the casts’ performances, and the crowdsourcing release soon to roll out, the following interview touches on personal style and the future of cinema itself. My review of the film can also be read here.
—
The Film Stage: Having seen your short film [Sangam] and now [Patang], there seems to be this theme of clashing perspectives—someone dreaming for progression and another person wanting to escape back to simplicity.

A retrospective of the films of the legendary Raj Kapoor – the first in nearly three decades – has been organized by the Toronto International Film Festival (Tiff), and to launch the event, Tiff, in collaboration with Iifa, held a tribute event in honour of the great showman last Sunday. Raj Kapoor and the Golden Age of Indian Cinema is designed to carry on the work begun by Iifa in Toronto, showcasing not only many of Raj Kapoor’s finest films (including Barsaat, Awaara, and Shree 420), but also some of the finest films to come out of Indian cinema starting in the 1950s.

Amit Chaudhuri abandoned western pop for Indian classical music years ago. But, writes the novelist and musician, he's returned to it via the most unexpected route
I did my best to escape music as a child, running very fast whenever my mother tried to teach me the Tagore songs she sang so beautifully, but my genes ensured music would eventually return to me, or I to it. On the other hand, the desire to be a writer, or someone who dealt with words, came early: from wanting to be the commander of an army, I graduated quite seamlessly toward the ambition of being a famous poet and sage by the time I was eight or nine. Still, growing up in the microcosm of a nuclear family located in a 12th-storey apartment in Mumbai, I was surrounded by music. There was my mother, of course, possessed of an extraordinary voice that never wavered from perfect pitch.
