The magical release of all of Tom's victims (birds, mice, and a goldfish) infer he's an active predator. But he virtually never succeeds in hunting in most shorts featuring him.
Jerry's home, and all of the details of the surrounding house, are carefully rendered, as were most featured cartoons of this era. The array of food depicted in the refrigerator and kitchen is mouth-watering.
Stage magicians were a popular feature on variety shows of the era, and appear in many cartoons as well.
Tom is actually heard in this short, though true to his character, he does not speak.
