The 1962 novel the film is adapted from is called Two Million Witnesses. However, during the preparation of the film, the number of TV set owners increased significantly and therefore the number in the title was also increased.
At the script stage, the film was to be the third in a series of crime films of director Vladimír Cech, following 105 % alibi (1959) and Kde alibi nestací (1961), and was to feature the detective duo Tuma (Karel Höger) and Líbal (Josef Bek).
