The traditional Japanese sandals which Zatoichi wears in the film are known as geta. The two large 'teeth' on the soles are called ha, while the sole which the foot rests upon is called dai (stand).
Tadasu Jumonji (as portrayed by Mikio Narita) can be seen wearing a traditional Japanese hat. This is known as a sandogasa, which means 'travel hat'.
Tadasu Jumonji (as portrayed by Mikio Narita) is the eponymous 'chess expert', however the game seen being played in the film is in fact Shogi. Shogi is sometimes referred to as Japanese chess or the Game of Generals. Shogi means general's board game.
This film is part of the jidai-geki genre, which translates to 'period drama'. It is also a 'chanbara' (sword fighting) film.
