    UNCLE is a secret international espionage agency which meaning was to be left ambiguous, so it could be viewed as either referring to "Uncle Sam" or the United Nations - which building in New York is prominently featured in the opening sequence for the series. But in order to make it clear to the viewer that the agency was not a part of the U.N., the producers added a «thanks» note in the end credits of the series: «We wish to thank the United Network Command for Law and Enforcement without whose assistance this program would not be possible.»



    THRUSH is the name of a bird or a disease, and the acronym for the evil organization battled by UNCLE. Originally it was named WASP in the series pilot movie. The original series never explained the acronym, but in several of the U.N.C.L.E. novels by David McDaniel, it was explained as the Technological Hierarchy for the Removal of Undesirables and the Subjugation of Humanity,
