Will Hutchins' horse during this TV series' first season was named "Sickle". He and the horse never "got along" and did not like each other, resulting in problems when his character, Tom Brewster, needed to be photographed either sitting on or riding his horse. For its second season Hutchins was given a horse named "Penny", with which was much easier for him to get along with and gave him no trouble;
as he said regarding Penny, "It was love at first sight."
The nickname "Sugarfoot" is a sarcastic reference to Tom Brewster's perceived lack of cowboy fighting skills.
After doing appearances as a guest star in many Westerns, this was the first time that Jack Elam was hired as a regular cast member in one.
Will Hutchins got to play a parody of his own character on an episode of the TV series Maverick (1957). After this TV series had been canceled, Hutchins did a guest appearance on Maverick (1957) as a character known only in the episode's credits as "Young Lawyer". Near the
end of the episode, Beau Maverick asks Hutchins' character, "Are you the one they call Sugarfoot?"
He then replies, "Sugarfoot? Never heard of him."
Adam West made three appearances on three different Western TV series as Doc Holliday. In addition to this TV series, he also played the role in two others: Colt .45 (1957) and Lawman (1958).
