The Music Room

FAQ

The lunisolar Bengali calendar. Early in the film it was mentioned that it is Falgun, a month corresponding to February/March on the Gregorian. The film ends on 1 Baishakh, Bengali New Year (Noboborsho), which falls in April in the Gregorian calendar.

The thread ceremony (Bengali: uponayon) is a Hindu ritual whereby a boy of higher caste comes of age (typically aged 13-17), in which he is wrapped in a thin three-stranded consecrated cord (Bengali: poité)

A zamindar is essentially an Indian nobleman, who inherits and owns enormous tracts of land, ruling over and taxing the local peasants. Some were like lords and barons; others were semi-indepedent princes. The zamindar system was abolished at India's independence (1949) and, in this film, Biswambhar Roy is only a zamindar by title; in reality, his land is destroyed by flooding and he is heavily indebted. The zamindar were gradually superseded by capitalists, such as Mahim Ganguly.
