Gary Cooper in Man of the West (1958)

Quotes

Man of the West

Edit
  • Link Jones: You know what I feel inside of me? I feel like killing. Like, like a sickness come back. I want to kill every last one of those Tobins. And that makes me just like they are. What I busted my back all those years trying not to be.
  • Link Jones: [Startled by the train engine] That's the ugliest thing I ever saw in my life!
  • Sam Beasley: [Sardonically] You never met my ex-wife.
  • Link Jones: Lassoo's a ghost town, and that's what you are, Dock! You've outlived your kind and outlived your time, and I'm comin' to get you!
  • Link Jones: There's a point where you either grow up and become a human being or you rot, like that bunch.
  • Link Jones: Don't you talk anymore, Claude? We used to talk, you and me, when we were kids. What happened? Things have kind of gone to hell haven't they? And you're still at it - stealing and killing and running.
  • Billie Ellis: Link, I never met a man like you before. Men I meet, all think they have a right to put their hands on me, like it comes with the introduction. All those lonely ones, looking for some kind of special thrill. I know what they are going to say before they say it. Funny part is, inside me, I'm just as lonely as they are.
  • Sam Beasley: Hello, Billie! Billie, you're lookin' very good!
  • Billie Ellis: Thanks, and I thought the only thing that looked good to you was a marked deck.
  • Sam Beasley: Billie, mind if I sit down? Thanks. You know, it's interesting, who you meet on the train.
  • Sam Beasley: Mr. Jones is lookin' to stretch his legs although I don't think he want them any longer than they are.
  • [laughs]
  • Coaley: [to Link] Do you talk?
  • Dock Tobin: There'a more money in that Lassoo bank than any one of you could think.
  • Billie Ellis: What are you lookin' at?
  • Link Jones: Your shoes.
  • Billie Ellis: [Looking down] My shoes? Oh, that makes this trip worthwhile. You're the first man who's looked at that part of me since I was 14 years old.
  • Dock Tobin: [to Link] I put a piece of work into you. every last idea that shot through your head was mine. I remember every bloody minute of it.
  • Claude: We're gonna kill you, Link. That's a promise!
  • Link Jones: You sound a little shaky, Claude. Are you nervous?
  • Willie: Well, I guess you'll be leaving now?
  • Billie Ellis: You're a good guesser. Goodbye, Willie. And thank you for being the only man at the Longhorn Palace that never made an indecent proposal.
  • Willie: Well, if I'd had my strength, I might have. Ha-ha-ha.
  • Billie Ellis: Tell her to sing loud and watch out for the manager's hands.
  • Willie: Good luck, there, Billie.
  • Dock Tobin: I remember the day you left me. Ho-ho, lord, do I remember. You were my right arm. You ran off and left me. God have mercy on my black blooded soul. Ha-ha-ha. I was so mad. I could take and push your guts right out through your back. And I would've done it too. So help me, if you'd a been standin' there. Raaaa! Ha-ha. I'd of opened you up wide. My right arm. Trained by me. Oh, I put a piece of work into you. Every last idea that shot through your head was mine. I remember every bloody minute of it.
  • Dock Tobin: God forgive us, we painted the wall with blood that time. Oh, ha-ha-ha, walked out of that bank with 11,000 dollars. Just, you and me. Ha-ha. Claude, riding behind us. And we murdered old Ben Skull together. You held him and I took off the top of his head. Ohhh, 7000 dollars. We were BIG! Don't you remember?
  • Link Jones: I remember.
  • Dock Tobin: You were my property. Why did you go off and leave me for?
  • Dock Tobin: Your woman, Link?
  • Link Jones: Yes. She's my woman.
  • Dock Tobin: Ha-ha. I admire your taste.
  • Dock Tobin: We are going to be together again, isn't that so?
  • Link Jones: That's right.
  • Dock Tobin: You came back to ride with me, didn't you?
  • Link Jones: That's why I came back
  • Dock Tobin: Yeah.
  • Coaley: He got left by the train. He's lying to you. I don't like having him here.
  • Dock Tobin: Your not big enough to shine his boots.
  • Dock Tobin: Remember a place called Lassoo?
  • Link Jones: Yes.
  • Dock Tobin: Ha-ha-ha. Oh, it makes my tired old heart PUMP like a young boys every time I hear the name. There's a stage bank there. Oh, big one. All the mines in the area ship there gold through there. I've been wanting to take it for years. Oh, ha-ha, Oh, it RINGS IN MY HEAD LIKE A BELL! LASSOOooooo! Ha-ha-ha!
  • Link Jones: [to Coaley during their brawl while seeking revenge for the treatment of Billie] "Now, I'm gonna undress you." Coaley, that's what you said to her, isn't it?
  • [Billie looks back with a shocked look on her face]
  • Dock Tobin: Oh, there's no GUTS anymore!
  • Claude: But, we got a lot of ground to cover. They'll just slow us down.
  • Coaley: That's right.
  • Claude: I say we open 'em up and just leave them here.
  • Coaley: That's what I say, open 'em up.
  • Ponch: Well, what about the girl?
  • Claude: We'll take care of her too.
  • Billie Ellis: I love touching you.
  • Billie Ellis: [Coaley sticks a knife next to Link's throat] LINK!
  • Link Jones: Take that knife away, Coaley.
  • Coaley: You're not talking us out of this.
  • [to Billie]
  • Coaley: Now undress. Start with the shoes. Do you want to see me cut him? Heh? Ha-ha!
  • [Billie begins to undress]
  • Coaley: The stockings... Get up. That shirt thing, now, peel it off... I don't have to tell you what's next, do I? Come on. Come on!
  • [to Link]
  • Coaley: How are enjoying this cousin? Heh? Heh?
  • Link Jones: Is this supposed to get you even for losing that train today?
  • Coaley: [to Billie] Get that petticoat off!
