The film is an adaptation of the short story "The Islington Mystery" by Arthur Machen (1863-1947). Machen was in turn inspired by the 1910 murder of Cora Henrietta Turner. Turner was killed by her husband, the American homeopath Hawley Harvey Crippen (1862-1910). Crippen was nicknamed "Dr. Crippen" but was not a physician.
