Death at Dawn

El Inocente

The alternate title ("El Inocente" ) is much better but maybe the producers thought it might be a spoiler;but even if you know this title (the movie was released in France under ANOTHER title and in England as "death at dawn"),it does the movie no harm.Actually the main problem is the hero's mind. They say he is a victim, they say he is guilty ,they say it was because of the war .The principal's psychology completely eludes the viewer. Why he behaves like he does is beyond me.

"Muerte" is actually very Simenonesque ,but it has a stranger side:for instance we learn a lot about a young cop who's a lady killer ,who's got problem with one of his legs and fears they discover it when he has a physical exam;then the young cop disappears and reappears only fifteen minutes before the end;the female parts are almost inexistent ,although Nadia Gray was a famous European star at the time.In a word: an offbeat work.
