Jake MacIllaney
- [at a police station, Jack MacIllaney and Dan Cabot can be seen walking. MacIllaney looks upbeat]
- Jake MacIllaney: Don't worry, Mr. Cabot. We'll beat this rap like we beat a carpet.
- Dan Cabot: Look, just a moment. I haven't decided whether I'm gonna take...
- Jake MacIllaney: Oh, sure you have. Look, you wanna be a successful lawyer, you can't start quittin' cases every time a client burns ya.
- [Jake pats Cabot's arm]
- Jake MacIllaney: Come on, how 'bout it?
- Dan Cabot: Well, all right.
- Jake MacIllaney: Ah, good, good.
- [in the police station, Dan Cabot and Jake MacIllaney can be seen in the hall. As they are walking, they stop near a telephone booth]
- Jake MacIllaney: Look, you got any dimes? I gotta make some phone calls.
- [MacIllaney reaches into his pocket and can apparently feel some coins]
- Jake MacIllaney: No, never mind, never mind, I got some.
- Dan Cabot: Now, don't you think you'd be better coming down to the office? We ought to start planning your defense.
- Dan Cabot: Oh, not yet. I'll call ya.
- Dan Cabot: Well, the hearing's set for Monday.
- Jake MacIllaney: And the election is Friday, I've got some arrangements to make.
- Dan Cabot: It's your freedom at stake.
- Jake MacIllaney: Say, uh, what do you think my chances are if, uh, Sleep-Out Charlie testifies against me?
- Dan Cabot: He filed a complaint, why wouldn't he testify?
- Jake MacIllaney: Well, that's one of the things I gotta arrange.
- Dan Cabot: [somewhat suspicious] What does that mean?
- Jake MacIllaney: [shakes his head] Nothin', forget I said it.
- Dan Cabot: You can tell me the truth, you know. Whatever you say to me is a privileged communication that need never to be revealed, even under oath.
- Jake MacIllaney: You mean it?
- Dan Cabot: Yes.
- Jake MacIllaney: Under oath?
- Dan Cabot: Yes.
- Jake MacIllaney: [smiles and raises his hand] Not guilty.
- [Jake MacIllaney can be seen arriving at the apartment of Winnipeg Simmons. He spritely approaches the door and knocks. Seconds later, the door opens and Winnipeg can be seen coming into view. Upon seeing Jake, she appears pleased as Jake enters]
- Jake MacIllaney: Ah, Winnipeg.
- Winnipeg Simmons: Jake, hi.
- Jake MacIllaney: [removes his hat] Boys here?
- Winnipeg Simmons: Yeah.
- [Jake enters another room, where he sees a few men sitting down. As he looks at them, Winnipeg catches his attention]
- Winnipeg Simmons: Just a minute. I'm not so sure I want jail birds in my apartment. I've gotta watch my reputation, you know.
- Jake MacIllaney: Watch it?
- Winnipeg Simmons: Uh-huh.
- Jake MacIllaney: I think you should wanna bury it.
- Winnipeg Simmons: [smiles] Oh, you're mean.
- [Jake kisses Winnipeg as he enters the room to talk to his associates]
- [Jake MacIllaney can be seen working near the docks. He and his associates are setting up a tent for an election. With him is who appears to be the dock boss, Morley Shannon]
- Jake MacIllaney: Much obliged for all this, Morley.
- Morley Shannon: I'm not doin' it for you, you door-mat thief. Anything to perplex or harass Merritt and his wharf rats. That's my motive!
- Jake MacIllaney: I'll feel obliged if I wanna!
- Morley Shannon: [pushes Jake] Ah, you take care of your end, and I'll take care of mine!
- [the two of them proceed to get into a skuffle]
- Morley Shannon: Let go! I'll pass out as good as night!
- [the two of them quickly stop fighting as Jake laughs and gives Morley a nearby bottle]
- Jake MacIllaney: Here, have one on me.
- [following a brief struggle at the docks, Jake MacIllaney can be seen giving a bottle to Morley Shannon. Morley takes the bottle before Jake backs him on the back]
- Jake MacIllaney: You're on your way.
- [Morley proceeds to slide down a tarp and into a nearby boat. He then turns around and look up at Jake]
- Morley Shannon: Neat, huh?
- Jake MacIllaney: [claps his hand and gives a sign of approval] Slick.
