Anne of the Thousand Days (1969)

Goofs

Anne of the Thousand Days

Edit

Continuity

Factual errors

Mary Tudor and her mother Catherine of Aragon are talking after Anne has become Queen. When Anne was Queen, Mary and her mother were forbidden to see each other.
During the papal trial presided over by Cardinal Campeggio, Cardinal Campeggio and Cardinal Wolsey sit before a coat of arms labeled "Clement VII", which is correct, but the papal arms incorrectly displays a blue shield with six gold discs. Clement VII was a de Medici, and his papal arms used the de Medici arms of a gold background with five red discs arranged under a single blue disc containing three gold fleurs-de-lis.
Irene Papas is Greek by origin. Thus, she is Orthodox Christian. But Katherine of Aragon was Spanish and a Catholic Christian. When Papas enters the court and makes the sign of the cross on her chest, she does it in the Orthodox way, using the three fingers instead of the whole palm of her right hand.
Greek actress Irene Papas, who plays Queen Catherine of Aragon, has very dark hair, whereas the real Catherine of Aragon had strawberry blonde hair, and at this stage in her life she would have been going gray.
Toward the end of the film, Anne uses wooden markers of one-hundred each to count her days as queen. However, she counts out only 9 markers, or 900 days.

Revealing mistakes

Cannons are fired during the royal couple's wedding procession and three years later to signal the death of Anne.

However, on both occasions not only are the exact same men firing the cannons (both in the foreground and background), they are all standing in exactly the same positions.
At the start of Henry and Anne's wedding procession there is a shot of a cannon being fired where the man lighting the fuse visibly flinches.

Moments later, during the procession, the same shot of the cannon and the man is used again.
Thomas More is executed on a black wooden platform. Years later a black wooden platform is shown being constructed for Anne's execution. Close examination of both platforms (for example, a darker wood 'knot' on one of the cross pieces), shows that it is the same platform in both cases.

Anachronisms

At one point, a jet plane can be seen in the sky.
When Anne's "lover" is being tortured, he screams out clearly showing metal dental fillings.
In a few scenes (when Anne and Henry bicker about the Act of Succession; when Anne and Elizabeth are playing before Anne's arrest), there is paneling on the walls with carvings of Catherine Howard's badge. The story takes place from 1525 to 1536; Catherine Howard (who was Anne's cousin) became Henry's wife in 1540.
When Mary Boleyn and her father are talking, a bobby pin can be seen in his hair in the curl just in front of his left ear.
There is a report that one of the beefeaters has "EIIR" (signifying Queen Elizabeth II) on his tunic. Elizabeth II ascended the throne 405 years after Henry VIII died.

Character error

It was well known in Hollywood that Burton's wife Elizabeth Taylor was up for the part of Anne, but was considered too old (37). She did however make a cameo appearance as one of the masked revelers who interrupts Catherine during her prayer vigil. A closeup shows her chest with a deep Hollywood tan which would be inconceivable for a cloistered lady of the court in the 1500s.
