In common with two other European-made Universal films of the same period (Secret Ceremony (1968) and The Night of the Following Day (1969)), this movie was subjected to a great deal of alteration when it came to be shown on American television a year or two after its cinema release. Not only were scenes trimmed or cut, but several new scenes were added to change the plot and make it less sensational. None of the original cast-members were in the new scenes, which were filmed in Hollywood by a new director and crew. Peter Hall savagely attacked Universal for this practice, which caused a storm of controversy, and this new version of the film was widely ridiculed; there were similar responses when the other two films were aired in their new versions, and thereafter Universal seemed to have stopped making such alterations.
Released on Blu-ray October 2023 in Region A only. Disc includes the so called TV Cut with additional scenes such as Judy Geeson's character's probation officer informing her step father and mother she had violated her parole conditions; a scene with said probation officer interacting with another young female client and a former boyfriend, and, rather predictably, Judy Geeson's topless scenes deleted.
The real-life marriage of Rod Steiger and Claire Bloom was coming apart whilst they were playing a warring, dysfunctional couple in this film, and their divorce was finalized around the time of the film's release. Director Peter Hall speculated that the tensions arising from making the film may have demolished any chance of a reconciliation between the two.
