Portraying reel life lovers in this movie, stars Shashi Kapoor and Jennifer Kendal, in real life were married.
The movie was notable for utilizing colorful billboards display throughout the Indian city of Bombay for its opening credits title cards. The billing on these billboards were inspired by the types of real life billboards that were omnipresent in the city of Bombay in India during the era the picture was made.
The giant typewriter prop has reportedly been the favorite ever movie set of the film's director James Ivory.
Star Shashi Kapoor partially financed the picture by distributing it himself in India.
First of three Merchant Ivory Productions with the word "Bombay" in the title with the others being The Courtesans of Bombay (1983) and Street Musicians of Bombay (1994). Producer Ismail Merchant was born in Bombay in Maharashtra, India
