Sharmila Tagore claims that she was first choice for the heroine role, but that she had turned it down because she was pregnant. Although the film's director Shakti Samanta confirmed her claim, Asha Parekh denied that she was ever second-choice for the role that won her the Filmfare Best Actress Award.
