The 101st was surrounded and cut off. Patton broke through the German lines; but no member of the 101st has ever agreed they needed rescuing.
After the July 20th assassination attempt on Hitler, Hitler used that as an excuse to get rid of Rommel and forced him to commit suicide on the promise that Rommel would keep his status as a war hero and his family wouldn't be subject to reprisal. Rommel agreed to commit suicide.
