This is left unexplained; the beginning subtly hints that the father is troubled and unhappy with civilized life. He is an Englishman that has moved his family to Australia, and appears to have difficulty adapting to his new surroundings. It has also been suggested he had something to do with the failure of the mine shown at the end of the film, as the papers he reads in his car are about minerals.
