Cabaret (1972)

FAQ

Cabaret

FAQ

Max wanted sexual relations with both Sally and Brian. Previously Brian had mentioned to Sally how his previous 3 attempts at sex with women failed, possibly due to erectile dysfunction or lack of desire. He was also hesitant to have sex with Sally at first as well.

The feeling is Brian was unsure of his sexuality with women and attempted to have sex with Max, but once again could not perform for one of the two reasons mentioned above. Thus, Max, frustrated at his failure to achieve his fantasy was disgusted with Brian and ended the relationship with both Sally and Brian.

The entire film was shot on location in Germany to recreate the atmosphere of the 1930s.

Presumably he is a WWI veteran and knows what Germany is going to go through again. He was meant to represent those of the German citizenry who disapproved of the rise of the National Socialists and longed for the old days (just as Frau Schneider had when she said, "I wish the Kaiser was back. In those days we had order"). It also provided a sad and chilling visual metaphor for the entire phenomenon: a lone old man, ignored amidst a sea of younger, enthusiastic supporters of the coming regime.
